German University of Münster Opens Germany’s First Independent Faculty of Islamic Studies
The University of Münster in Germany has opened the first independent Faculty of Islamic Studies in Germany. This step strengthens the independent academic study of Islamic beliefs and thought at German universities. The faculty has about 450 students and 8 professors. It offers academic programs in several fields, including Islamic philosophy and Islamic religious education. It also offers special programs to train teachers of Islamic religious education.
The project goes back to 2012, when the university established a center for Islamic Studies. In July 2026, the center officially became an independent faculty. The faculty is planned to become part of the university’s campus for theology and religious studies. This campus will also include the Catholic Faculty and the Protestant Faculty. This will bring different religious fields together in one academic setting.
