Germany’s Opportunity Card: German Language Skills Can Earn Applicants Important Points

Germany allows qualified professionals from outside the European Union to apply for the Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte) to search for qualified employment in the country. Under one of the available routes, applicants are assessed through a points system and generally need to obtain at least 6 points, in addition to meeting the basic requirements concerning qualifications, financial means, health insurance, and other conditions.

German language proficiency is one of the key factors in the points system. Applicants receive 1 point for German at level A2, 2 points at B1, and 3 points at B2 or higher. Level A1 does not provide additional points, although it can satisfy the minimum German-language requirement. Language points are not cumulative; only the applicant’s highest proven German level is counted.

English proficiency can also play a role. English at B2 level can meet the minimum language requirement instead of A1 German, while C1 English or higher may provide an additional point.

Points can also be awarded for other factors, including partial recognition of qualifications, professional experience, age, certain qualifications in shortage occupations, previous residence in Germany, and, in specific circumstances, the applicant’s spouse or partner.

After obtaining the Opportunity Card, holders can generally stay in Germany for up to 12 months to search for employment and may work for up to 20 hours per week, subject to the applicable conditions. Once suitable qualified employment is found, the holder may switch to the appropriate residence permit for employment if the relevant requirements are met.

These rules mean that improving German language proficiency from A1 to B1 or B2 can significantly increase an applicant’s points, although eligibility ultimately depends on the applicant’s overall profile and compliance with all applicable requirements.
