How Do You Choose the Right Level to Start Learning German?
Choosing the right level is one of the most important first steps when you want to learn German effectively. Not every learner should start at the same level. If you have never studied German before, A1 is normally the appropriate starting point. At this level, you learn basic pronunciation, greetings, numbers, simple sentences, personal information, and essential grammar.
If you have studied German in the past, however, you should not automatically start from A1. It is better to take a placement test first and then evaluate your actual abilities. A good assessment should consider the four main language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. For example, you may understand basic grammar well but still have difficulty speaking or understanding German when people talk quickly.
In general, A1 and A2 focus on building the foundation. B1 and B2 develop more independent communication and a broader ability to understand conversations and texts. C1 and C2 represent advanced levels of language proficiency.
The most important point is to choose a level based on your real knowledge rather than your expectations. The right level should be understandable but still challenging enough to help you improve. Starting at the appropriate level saves time, increases motivation, and helps you build your German skills step by step with confidence.
